The Degen Score

The Degen Score is our 0–10 rating for a crypto sportsbook. It is a weighted average of four criteria — custody & settlement (30%), odds & margin (30%), payout speed & treatment of winners (25%), and coin & chain support (15%) — applied identically to all 12 platforms we cover.

It is derived, not decided. We score the four criteria; arithmetic produces the number. Nobody sits down and picks a total that feels about right, and no platform can pay to move it. Because we publish all four sub-scores on every review, you can recalculate any Degen Score on this site yourself — and tell us if it comes out differently.

The formula

Degen Score = (Custody × 0.30) + (Odds × 0.30) + (Payout × 0.25) + (Coins × 0.15), rounded to one decimal place.

Worked example, SX Bet: (9.8 × 0.30) + (9.2 × 0.30) + (9.6 × 0.25) + (6.4 × 0.15) = 2.94 + 2.76 + 2.40 + 0.96 = 9.1. A weak coin-support score drags a near-perfect platform down almost a full point — which is the weighting doing its job, not a glitch.

Where two platforms land on the same total, the higher custody sub-score ranks first. That is why Overtime Markets sits above BetDEX at 8.7, and why Stake sits below BetDEX despite both scoring 8.6.

The four inputs

1. Custody & settlement — 30%

The most important question, and the one most often obscured: are funds genuinely non-custodial and settled by smart contract, or is “crypto” just a payment rail bolted onto a conventional book that holds your balance on its own ledger? We check the actual settlement mechanism, whether contracts have been independently audited, and whether the platform discloses its custody model plainly on its own site. A platform marketing itself as decentralized while operating custodially is scored on what it does, not what it says.

Scale: 9–10 non-custodial, settling by contract · 6–7.5 custodial but transparent about it, with a clean record · 3–5 custodial while marketing as decentralized.

2. Odds & margin — 30%

How much the book takes out of a market. We compare pricing on the same fixtures across platforms to identify who quietly shades their lines. For exchanges and AMMs, the equivalent question is the fee structure and whether it is charged on turnover or only on net winnings — a difference that matters far more to a bettor’s returns than any welcome bonus.

3. Payout speed & treatment of winners — 25%

Time from withdrawal request to funds landing, and — just as important — whether a platform limits or closes accounts that win consistently. On-chain platforms settle by contract, so the question there is block time and gas. On custodial books it is a policy question, and advertised “instant withdrawals” don’t always survive contact with a manual review queue.

4. Coin & chain support — 15%

Which assets and networks you can actually fund and withdraw with, whether stablecoins are available so you’re not exposed to price swings mid-bet, and whether network fees are passed on at deposit or withdrawal.

What a Degen Score means

• 9.0–10 — Non-custodial, priced sharply, settles fast. No significant reservation.
• 8.0–8.9 — Strong across most criteria with one clear trade-off, usually custody or market coverage.
• 7.0–7.9 — Works, but with a real limitation you should understand before depositing.
• 6.0–6.9 — Custodial while presenting as crypto-native, or thin on something that matters.
• Below 6.0 — Listed so you can compare it, not because we would point you at it.

What the Degen Score is not

It is not a measure of bonus size — most of the platforms here run no bonus at all, and a large headline offer with an unrealistic rollover is worth less than a small clean one. It is not a popularity or traffic ranking. It is not influenced by our affiliate relationships: the three platforms that pay us commission currently sit 5th, 6th and 8th. And it does not yet include first-hand timed withdrawal measurements — when we publish those, they will carry the test date and sample size alongside them.

Checked, but not scored

Two things influence our written verdict without carrying a weight in the number. Bonus terms — wagering multiplier, time limit, maximum bet size while wagering, which markets count. And support quality, which we note where we have evidence but do not score, since we have no consistent measurement across all 12 platforms.

What we can’t verify

Some things simply aren’t publicly checkable: real betting volume on early-stage platforms, internal limiting policies, and the completeness of audits we can only read second-hand. Where that’s the case we say so in the review and score the platform lower for the uncertainty, rather than filling the gap with the operator’s own claims.

How is the Degen Score calculated?

Each platform gets a sub-score out of 10 on each of the four criteria. The Degen Score is those four numbers multiplied by their published weights and added together, rounded to one decimal place. It is derived arithmetically and never set by hand, so anyone can recalculate it from the sub-scores we publish on every review.

Can a platform pay for a higher Degen Score?

No. DegenStake carries affiliate links and earns commission on some outbound clicks, but no placement or score is for sale. The three platforms that pay us the most currently rank 5th, 6th and 8th.

Why do custodial platforms score lower?

Custody carries the heaviest weight at 30%, because whether a smart contract or a company holds your balance is the difference that survives everything else. A custodial book with a clean record still scores well on the other three criteria, but it cannot reach the top of the range.
